Acura is taking a 500-horsepower TLX A-Spec to Pikes Peak


If you want to test the mettle of your automobile, then take it to Pikes Peak. And that’s exactly what Acura is doing with its 500-horsepower TLX A-Spec. This is the sixth straight year the Japanese automaker will sent a fleet of vehicles to participate in the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This year Acura is bringing some brand new automobiles to the challenging annual event.

There will be three Acura automobiles in the field for the 2017 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The vehicles the company is sending to make the climb up Pikes Peak are an Acura NSX performance coupe and two different TLX sedans. For many people, the most important vehicle in this year’s race is the Acura TLX A-Spec. The event is the racing debut for the TLX A-Spec and everyone is expecting great things from the vehicle because of what it has under the hood and Acura’s impeccable reputation for making quality automobiles known for their comfort, performance, durability and fuel economy. The Acura TLX A-Spec has what it takes to make its mark in this fun event on Pikes Peak. The vehicle is powered by a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 500 horsepower. That’s enough to make to the top of Pikes Peak at a steady gallop. Add its modified suspension as well as its carbon-fiber aerodynamic bits, plus a fully stripped interior and it’s easy to see why Acura is confident this vehicle will give the competitors a run for their money. Acura’s secret weapon is driver Nick Robinson. A veteran of Pikes Peak events, he won his class in last year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb driving a 2017 Acura NSX. The TLX A-Spec will race in the Exhibition class.

The other TLX in the event is the TLX GT. This automobile has participated is the Pikes Peak event in the past. Plus, it’s powered by the twin-turbocharged V6 engine it used when it participated in the Pirelli World Challenge series between 2014 and 2016. However, slight alterations have been made to the tuning to enable it to better handle the elevation. Long-time racer Peter Cunningham, who works with RealTime Racing, will drive the vehicle. The TLX GT will compete in the Open class.

Then there’s the NSX. Just like last year, this vehicle draws a great deal of inspiration from Acura’s NSX GT3 racecar. This NSX weighs less and is more aerodynamic than regular road cars. The car’s software is tuned for handling hill climbs and it will be equipped with sticky R-compound tires designed to help navigate Pikes Peak’s 100-plus turns. Long-time Pikes Peak driver and Honda R&D powertrain group member James Robinson will pilot the NSX. It will be a Time Attack 1 Class participant.

The 95th edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb takes place on June 25. The three Acura automobiles will compete against other automakers including the Faraday Future FF 91 electric car. The company announced it will race in the Exhibition class.
