Is Acura bringing back an affordable sports car to the brand by producing a new-gen Integra/RSX? According to Car and Driver Magazine, the answer is – maybe. During the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Car and Driver reports Acura chief designer Dave Marek said “a performance brand needs a flagship and it needs an accessible sport car. Not a sports car, but a sport car.”

One of the primary benefits associated with this movement is that it is going to provide drivers with a more affordable sports vehicle. Back in the 1990s, the Acura was considered a budget-friendly vehicle for younger enthusiasts, and was a top performer as well. The NXS was also an exotic vehicle that had a lot of flagship. Acura will launch their new Integra with the intention of revitalizing this demographic with a sporty, yet, affordable Acura Integra, according to Car and Driver Magazine. Check out Chapman Acura to learn more.

To provide drivers with a clue, Acura used their SEMA stage to display the TLX sedan by Galpin Auto Sports (based in Los Angeles). They equipped it with 19-inch wheels, lowered suspension, and a body kit. The TLX was painted in a vibrant blue color, one that will be available on future productions. However, the mid-size sedan isn’t very likely to ignite tuners as the RSX or Integra. Several different NXS and Integra models were seen at the 2014 SEMA show, although most of them had been out of production for many years.

A new NSX is expected to become available in 2015; Car and Driver said it will be two more years after that when the more affordable Acura performance models are launched. The Acura chief designer didn’t provide many more details than this; leaving it up to the consumers to use their imaginations as to what this new lineup of performance vehicles are going to be like. Car and Driver quoted him saying, “There are changes coming, and then there are more changes coming”. A newer Acura ILX was introduced to the L.A. auto show in mid-November, and it provided enthusiasts with a hint as to which direction Acura is going to take their Integra. A Tucson Acura dealer will definitely be able to provide you with more information.

Overall, expect this direction to include a sportier design and engine, but without the huge price tag that typically comes associated with performance-based vehicles. The Acura Integra was one of the more definitive vehicles to hit American soil. And ever since the retirement of the highly popular RSX, the compact, sporty vehicle “niche” is one that desperately needs to be filled again. The new Integra is going to help Acura fill this void, and hopefully make a lot of consumers satisfied in the process.

Although, as Car and Driver Magazine reports, the possibility of this new sports coupe is still a few years away, Acura has already taken steps to ensure that they revitalized the market’s vision of this new model. The fact that the TLX experienced strong initial sales is a good sign for the new launch. Marek went on to conclude that the new model has, “a potent new powertrain, more forceful, sporty exterior styling, and a substantially upgraded interior design”. At this point, it’s not a matter of “if”, but instead, a matter of “when” the new Integra is going to hit the open market.

It takes a lot of guts to go up against the brand name that has been synonymous with high-end automobiles for decades, but Acura has made it very clear with the second generation 2016 Acura NSX they are taking aim at Ferrari. If you want to get one, you should check out the selection at Chapman Acura.

Specifically, they are hoping to match the speed, acceleration, and performance of a Ferrari 458 Italia, which tops out at 570 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. This is no easy feat on its own, but couple that with the desire to keep the price around the same level as the Audi R8, which starts at over $100,000 cheaper than the Italia, and you have a real challenge on your hands.

But even that is not the entire goal. Beyond both wanting to match the Italia’s performance and beat its price, they also want to make the NSX much more fuel-efficient by introducing a revolutionary new hybrid system.

Once again, for the sake of comparison, the Ferrari 458 Italia has a fuel rating of 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 on the highway. Not great in general, but not terrible for a high-performance sports car.

The 2016 Acura NSX will feature a new engine setup called the Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive system (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD). This would take a gas powered engine and mid-mount it, then surround it with three electric motors. Two of them would be dedicated to running the front wheels independently of one another while the third would handle the back wheels. Keep in mind that by this time, Acura plans to have all of its models be all wheel drive, so there will likely be a highly advanced system to ensure that the timing of all of this remains precise while driving. Either way, there should be a huge increase in fuel efficiency.

One of the interesting things about the electric engines is that they will be integrated with a dual-clutch transmission and twin-turbocharged V-6 to maintain the power they need to push out the desired horsepower, and all three will be powered by a central lithium-ion battery, mounted low to the ground and topped up with regenerative brakes.

This is turning out not only to be relatively inexpensive for a Ferrari competitor and capable of incredible performance, but it’s also positioned to be one of the cleanest and most efficient cars available on the market.

Chief engineer on the car Ted Klaus has stated that he is focused on making this car one that can perform regularly, not just in controlled conditions. “We have to achieve the type of acceleration that the customer is achieving with the Ferrari,” said Klaus. “More importantly we have to achieve this every day and at the Nürburgring.”

There was a time when claims like this wouldn’t have been taken seriously. The very notion was unthinkable. But considering the bold moves that Acura has been doing lately and the quality of automobile they have been producing at every level, Ferrari should probably watch out. Hybrid vehicles are a relatively new type of car that has gained popularity in the twenty-first century. Featuring gasoline engines and powered by electric batteries, they are seen as an alternative to “gas guzzlers” and a way to help the environment.  However, the hybrid has evolved since its early predecessor, and the 2014 Acura RLX Hybrid features what is being dubbed SH-AWD, or Super-Handling All Wheel Drive, considered by experts to be the most sophisticated hybrid system ever developed.

Like other hybrids, it features a 3.5-liter gasoline V-6 engine, but this is where the similarities end.  With an IMA hybrid engine, the electric motor is powered by a regenerative brake system. That may seem like a lot, but that’s only the front of the RLX. For the real showstopper, you have to look under the rear of the car, and you’ll find the twin motor unit. That’s right; the RLX has three motors, creating over two-hundred feet of torque. Each motor is fed independent power, and will pull different amounts of power from each, depending on driving conditions.

With a seven speed dual clutch gearbox, the SH-AWD is not only safe to drive on the wettest and messiest of roads, it’s also an ease to control on dry Arizona roads. It also gets over thirty miles to the gallon, more than six miles over the standard RLX. Eventually though, the gas runs out, and you have to find where the nearest pump is. In other cars, you have to take your eyes off the road, and may create a hazard for yourself, and other drivers. Acura has worked to make this the safest car on the road, and this starts with the head up display.  In the 2014 Acura RLX Hybrid, your speed, navigation, and other data is displayed on the lower windshield, so you can keep your eyes ahead of you, and stay aware of the road. With this, and the sixteen LED lights in the headlights, the RLX can be seen as the safest car on the streets.

Acura’s website says that, “this is no mere hybrid with one eye on the gas gauge. This is the RLX Sport Hybrid with both eyes on the road ahead.” If you want a driving experience like no other, visit Chapman Acura, and ask to see the 2014 Acura RLX!
