2014 Acura RLX SH-AWD

On sale in spring, 2014, the new Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is the first vehicle to use Acura’s new three-motor hybrid powertrain technology. The system consists of a 310hp direct-injected V6 gasoline engine paired with an all-new 7-speed dual clutch transmission with built-in electric motor and an electrically powered variant of Acura’s torque-vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).

Based on the conventional RLX, the electric SH-AWD system on the RLX Sport Hybrid eliminates the conventional drive shaft and rear differential, replacing them with two high-output 36hp electric motors. The new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD matches its primary gasoline engine with three electric motors to create a setup with 377 total horsepower. Its 310-horse/3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 with Variable Cylinder Management drives the front wheels via a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission while a 36.2-horse electric motor at each rear wheel creates a sophisticated four-corner drive system that can immediately deliver positive or negative torque to optimize traction and improve handling in real time. The motors at each wheel are nourished with a 260-volt lithium-ion battery pack and work in sync with a third 47-horse motor integrated with the transmission that enhances the engine’s torque to quicken acceleration. Like the rear motors, it also uses regenerative braking to help replenish battery charge on the fly. EPA estimates the new RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD to earn 28 city/32 highway mpg ratings.*

On the design front, the car looks similar to other 2014 Acura RLX models, but integrates new technologies. The former replaces the conventional, center console-mounted shift lever with a push-button array that allows the driver to select the desired drive mode.

In addition, the new transmission in the 2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD also introduces an electronic gear selector. Console mounted, it replaces the conventional shift lever with a push button array that frees up space and allows the driver to choose Park/Drive/Reverse as well as Normal/Sport mapping modes. Another exciting piece of new technology is an Acura Head-Up Display System the projects a variety of relevant data on the windshield and includes a special mode for Sport Hybrid system operation.

The RDX is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 with 273 hp and 251 pound-feet of torque. Power routes through a six-speed automatic transmission, with a choice between standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. The front-wheel drive model achieves 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined, while the all-wheel drive model is estimated at 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined*.

Inside, the 2014 Acura RDX is a classic representation of form meeting function. Numerous buttons populate the dash and steering wheel, but they are relatively easy to use and identify. In terms of hauling power, the RDX offers an extensive 76.9 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, topping virtually all compact competitors.

The RDX is available in two trim levels: base and base with Technology package. Included with the base model is a long list of standard equipment. Key features consist of a Multi-view backup camera, heated front seats with a 10-way power driver’s seat, and a seven-speaker audio system with a 5-inch LCD display, voice-activated text messaging and Pandora Internet radio.

The Technology package adds xenon headlights, foglights, a power liftgate, a navigation system (with real-time traffic and weather), voice controls, GPS-linked and solar-sensing automatic climate control, and a 10-speaker Acura/ELS surround-sound audio system with 15GB of music storage.

As for safety, the 2014 Acura RDX comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. A rearview camera is standard as well. In Edmunds brake testing, an all-wheel-drive RDX came to a stop from 60 mph in 127 feet, a few feet longer than average for this class.
